What Does a School Counselor Do?

Individual Counseling

Students are able to meet with the counselor one time or on a short-term recurring basis to discuss a variety of reasons including concerns with friends, family, school, and other areas.  Students may be referred by a parent or teacher or they may refer themselves.

Group Counseling

Counseling groups can be formed as a way for students to work together to learn and grow in a variety of areas.  Friendship groups are common at the elementary level, although groups can be formed to work on a variety of goals.

Counselors go into each classroom once a week to cover a variety of topics and information.
